Leipzig - The Ahmadiyya community made its plans for the construction of a mosque in Leipzig's Gohlis district public in 2013.

The building is one of the first Islamic places of worship in East Germany outside of Berlin.

After the plans were announced, there were repeated violent protests.

For example, bloody pig heads were impaled on the property.

The Ahmadiyya community, which is represented worldwide, is considered to be willing to integrate and peace-loving, but also to be conservative in terms of values.

The members describe themselves as open and reformist, but strictly adhere to the rules of the Koran.

The parish has come under fire in the past mainly because of its conservative gender roles.
