A federal government made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP could promote the legalization of cannabis.
Police unions are now warning.
Frankfurt / Berlin - The topic of cannabis legalization * in Germany has been discussed for a long time.
With the CDU * led federal government, however, it has not been politically feasible over the past 16 years.
With the explorations of a so-called traffic light coalition made up of the SPD *, the Greens and the FDP, new momentum could come into the subject.
Cannabis legalization: Greens and FDP want controlled release
FDP * and Greens * are in favor of the approval of cannabis under certain conditions.
Legal and controlled delivery should be possible in licensed specialist shops.
Former Greens chairman and member of the Bundestag Cem Özdemir highlighted the disadvantages of the previous black market before the 2021 federal election *: "The dealer on the corner" doesn't care about youth protection and you never know what's really in the bag.
Therefore, Özdemir is in favor of legalization.

According to the FDP and the Greens, a decriminalization of cannabis could also relieve the police and the judiciary and dry up the black market.
Tax revenues of up to one billion euros are also an advantage, according to Liberals.
The money could be invested in drug prevention and treatment.
Legalization of cannabis: SPD wants decriminalization
The SPD also sees a need for reform when it comes to cannabis, but the party of Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz * does not plan to legalize it.
Instead, the SPD election program * provides for model projects by federal states and municipalities, which are accompanied by prevention, counseling and treatment measures.
Nationwide, the SPD plans that the possession of small amounts of cannabis will not be prosecuted.

First, prevention must be strengthened before legalization can be achieved, and that takes time, says Sebastian Fiedler, Member of the Bundestag, explaining the Social Democrats' plan.
“When it comes to cannabis, I don't see any hurdles for a traffic light coalition because I discover a large common line of the three parties involved,” said Fiedler, who is also chairman of the Federation of German Detectives, confidently according to RTL.
Legalization of cannabis: police unionists warn traffic light parties
Police unions, however, warn a possible new traffic light government coalition against legalizing cannabis.
It makes no sense to open the door for another "dangerous and often played down" drug in addition to the legal but dangerous alcohol, said the federal chairman of the police union (GdP), Oliver Malchow.
"It must finally be over with glossing over the joint," he told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on Tuesday (October 12th, 2021).
The consumption of cannabis can lead to considerable health problems and social conflicts, especially among young people.

Cannabis is a dangerous gateway drug, warned the chairman of the German Police Union (DPolG) Rainer Wendt in the NOZ. Because of the uncontrollable nature of the composition, it is particularly dangerous for young people. Wendt fears fatal consequences on the road: "If people with stoned people soon take part in road traffic, we will have a problem." Even now, accidents with innocent injured people are repeatedly occurring due to cannabis consumption; the control by the police is completely inadequate.
The professional association "PolizeiGrün" sees it differently.
“The prohibition of cannabis has failed.
It is time to think about models of #Legalization “, wrote the Association of Police Officers on Monday (October 11th, 2021) on Twitter.
