The Viez cider, which is widespread on the Moselle and Saar, is now in the running for inclusion in the nationwide list of intangible cultural heritage by Unesco.
The “Trier Viezbruderschaft” association handed over the application on Tuesday to Andrea Stockhammer, the representative of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Interior, who is responsible for cultural heritage.
Trier - It is "a very carefully made application, a high-quality application" that the expert panel can now deal with, she said.
The committee, chaired by Stockhammer, will select up to four applications from Rhineland-Palatinate by April 15, 2022, which would then be submitted to the German UNESCO Commission via the Conference of Ministers of Culture.
A decision on listing is expected in March 2023, she said.
The typical regional Viez, also at home in the Eifel and Hunsrück, goes back to a centuries-old tradition and is closely linked to the preservation of orchards and fruit production.
It is usually served in the so-called Viezporz, the typical drinking vessel.
The city of Trier supports the application.
The Viez is a cultural asset in the region: "Viez plays a role in many areas of regional culture," said Markus Nöhl, Head of the Department of Culture.
Lord Mayor Wolfram Leibe (both SPD) said: “The Viez is what distinguishes our quality of life and regional identity.” The drink is “something special” that should also be promoted nationally.
