The Severe Tropical Storm Compasses is approaching Hong Kong today (October 12). It is expected that it will intensify into a typhoon tomorrow (October 13) and the No. 8 typhoon signal has been issued by the Observatory.

Early in the morning, the Lion Rock struck Hong Kong, and the Observatory changed its forecast many times. Even the Chief Executive Carrie Lam also pointed out that there is room for improvement in the release of the message.

If the public wants to know how the wind is in each district, they can refer to the eight wind measurement stations used by the Observatory to determine the typhoon signal and the data of the wind stations in each district.

Earlier, when the Lion Rock storm hit Hong Kong, some netizens questioned that the wind power in the area was not up to standard.

According to the Observatory’s website, since 2007, when the Observatory considers the issuance of tropical cyclone warning signals No. 3 and 8, it will refer to Ta Kwu Ling, Lau Fau Shan, Sha Tin, Sai Kung, Tsing Yi, Kai Tak, Chek Lap Kok and Cheung Chau to cover the whole of Hong Kong. And the wind data recorded by a network of reference wind measuring stations close to sea level, because these 8 reference wind measuring stations should be able to reflect the general wind conditions in Hong Kong.

When the continuous wind speed recorded or expected to be recorded by half or more of the wind measurement stations in the reference network reaches the relevant wind speed limit, and the wind may continue, the signal No. 3 or No. 8 will be issued.

The wind speed range of signal 3 is 41 to 62 kilometers per hour, while signal 8 is 63 to 117 kilometers per hour.

When a tropical cyclone is far away from Hong Kong, its associated outer rainbands will occasionally cross Hong Kong and bring squally winds, causing four or more reference wind measurement stations to record wind speeds exceeding those specified by Signal No. 3 or No. 8 in a short period of time. Lower limit of wind speed.

As the wind is not expected to continue after the rainband passes, the Observatory generally does not issue relevant signals.
