In the north of Berlin, long-distance trains in the direction of Rostock, Schwedt or Stettin will be faster in the future.
With the double-track expansion of the Karower Cross between Blankenburg and Karow, Deutsche Bahn has removed a bottleneck on the only access route for long-distance trains to and from the north.
The second track was put into operation on Tuesday after around four years of construction.
Berlin - From now on, trains can travel 160 kilometers per hour at this point.
"We are creating more capacity, becoming significantly more reliable and making rail transport even more attractive," said Infrastructure Director Ronald Pofalla.
In addition to the construction of the additional track, the railway renewed the signal boxes and laid new overhead lines on the 3.1 kilometer section of the route.
In addition, noise barriers were erected and several railway bridges were renewed.
All bridge work as part of the project should be completed by 2023.
According to Bahn, the total costs amounted to around 200 million euros.
