According to a ruling by the Hessian State Social Court, disabled people are entitled to aids to ensure their mobility and independence as far as possible.
"Insured persons are entitled to aids from the health insurance company that are required in individual cases to compensate for a disability," said the court in Darmstadt on Tuesday.

A man from the Wetteraukreis, born in 1958, had applied for an electrically assisted handbike from the health insurance company for his folding wheelchair.
The cash register rejected this 8,600 euro expensive aid, arguing that he could move around sufficiently with the available aids and an electric wheelchair offered for 5,000 euros.
The man, who had been paralyzed in an accident at the age of 20, stated that without this aid he could not negotiate curbs or drive down sloping stretches.
He has no strength to grip and therefore cannot tilt the wheelchair or brake.
For an electric wheelchair, he also needs an assistant to move it while he can assemble the handbike himself.
