The army in Kuwait wants to allow women as soldiers in the future.
Defense Minister Hamad Jaber al-Ali al-Sabah said on Twitter on Tuesday that the door was now open to women.
After having only been allowed to take on civilian tasks in the military for years, women can now fight as soldiers and also pursue a career as an officer.
"It is time that the Kuwaiti women were given the opportunity to join the Kuwaiti military side by side with their brothers," the minister said, according to a report by the state news agency Kuna.
In 1962, Kuwait was the first Arab Gulf state to introduce a parliamentary system.
Women have had the right to vote and to stand as a candidate since 2005.
