Anyone who feels they are not being treated properly by the doctor, dentist or nursing staff and suspects a mistake can consult the medical service.

A not inconsiderable number of cases in Saxony-Anhalt actually turn out to be treatment errors.

Magdeburg - The Medical Service Saxony-Anhalt investigated 334 suspected medical errors in the past year.

In every fifth report (21.2 percent) he actually recognized an error and damage to the patient, according to the statistics published by the Medical Service on Tuesday.

In 14.7 percent of the cases, the experts found that the treatment error was also the cause of the damage.

In total, that was 49 cases in the country.

The treatment errors found relate to a wide variety of diseases and treatments.

The number of reports on suspected medical errors decreased significantly from 481 to 334 compared to the pre-Corona year 2019. The Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Service, Jens Hennicke, does not see a precise explanation for this. On the one hand, the cases did not all originate from the review year 2020, but could have been a long time ago. However, Corona may also have an influence. Many hospital beds remained vacant and operations were postponed. Hennicke is again assuming a plus in the treatment error statistics for the current year.

Employees were also trained with regard to the ventilation of Covid patients and long-term Covid consequences.

In the 2020 assessments, only incorrect treatment in connection with Corona was suspected: A corona infection had occurred after an operation, but the medical service did not prove any causal damage, as it was said.

Seafarers are still suffering from corona restrictions

Because of the restrictions due to the corona pandemic, seafarers often have to avoid going ashore during their deployment and accept significantly longer journey times.

Some shipping companies forbid ship crews to go ashore - for fear that they will bring the corona virus on board, says Verdi union secretary Susana Ventura: "This is not acceptable and legally questionable."

In the past year, people have reported particularly frequently for treatment with suspected medical malpractice.

According to the medical service, there were 54 allegations against outpatient or inpatient care facilities and 61 allegations relating to care during hospital treatment.

As examples, he cited the consequences of incorrect positioning of bedridden people or a lack of fluid intake.

In orthopedics and trauma surgery, the suspicion of malpractice was most often expressed in connection with hip and knee joint operations;

all in all there were 25 suspected errors.

CEO Hennicke explained: "Some of the suspected medical errors result from a lack of communication during the educational discussions." Every operation carries risks. If the patients are not fully informed, they will quickly suspect that something has gone wrong. Hennicke spoke out in favor of a culture of mistakes, in which mistakes are talked about and documented in order to do better afterwards.

The medical service pointed out that its numbers only reflect part of the medical error allegations people turn to their health insurers.

Therefore, no generally valid conclusions could be drawn about the safety in hospitals and doctors' offices.

How many medical errors actually occurred remains unknown.

Reports on suspected malpractice are free of charge for patients with statutory health insurance.

The first point of contact is the health insurance company.
