Stuttgart - Winfried Kretschmann is actually one of the most popular Prime Ministers in Germany.
The 73-year-old Green politician has been the head of government of Baden-Württemberg since 2011.
Only the two CDU Prime Ministers Volker Bouffier (Hesse) and Reiner Haseloff (Saxony-Anhalt) have been in office longer.
In a recent survey on the mood in the southwest, however, Kretschmann's party is now losing significantly.

Seven months after the state elections in Baden-Württemberg, the Greens as well as the government partner CDU have clearly lost approval according to a survey.
The Greens remain in first place with 24 percent, but lose 8.6 percentage points compared to their result in the March election, as an Insa survey on behalf of the
Bild newspaper
showed.
The CDU, junior partner in the green-black coalition, is slipping further and is only third with 20 percent (minus four points).
A total minus 12.6 percent for the current government.
The SPD, which triumphed in the federal elections at the end of September, also improved significantly in the survey for Baden-Württemberg.
It can almost double its result to 21 percent (plus 10 points) and overtakes the CDU to take second place.
The FDP also gains significantly and thus creates 16 percent (plus 5.5).
The AfD loses easily and comes to 9 percent.
The left, which has never been represented in the Stuttgart state parliament, comes to 3 percent.

The next state election is not planned until 2026. Theoretically, the green-black coalition would lose its parliamentary majority after the results of the poll. It wouldn't be enough for green-red either. A green-led traffic light coalition would be possible, which together would come to 61 percent. That would be a novelty. So far there has only been a traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP under social democratic leadership - in Rhineland-Palatinate and soon also at the federal level.
The Greens could also form a Jamaica alliance with the Union and the FDP.
A so-called Germany coalition consisting of the SPD, CDU and FDP would also be conceivable, with the Social Democrats providing the prime minister.
Meanwhile, it is questionable whether Winfried Kretschmann will run again in 2026.
He had struggled with himself even before the most recent state election, but then decided to try again.
With success - even if the current polls are less positive for his government.
