The photographer Evelyn Richter is dead. As the Museum of Fine Arts (MdbK) in Leipzig announced on Tuesday, she died on October 10 at the age of 91.
Richter was regarded as a chronicler of the living and working worlds in the GDR.
She portrayed people in everyday situations, but also photographed urban landscapes that documented the dreariness and decay in the workers-and-peasants state.
Leipzig - Richter was born on January 31st in Bautzen, East Saxony.
After an apprenticeship as a photographer in Dresden, she began studying in Leipzig, but, according to the MdbK, was de-registered after two years.
Richter always worked as a freelancer.
Last year she was awarded the Bernd and Hilla Becher Prize from the city of Düsseldorf for her life's work.
