North Rhine-Westphalia's beekeepers have suffered significant losses in their honey harvest this year.
On average, each bee colony weighed a total of 27.1 kilos, 9.2 kilos less than in 2020, as the German Beekeeping Association announced on Tuesday in Wachtberg.
The harvest this year is divided into 11.2 kilos of early garb and 15.9 kilos of summer garb - both values are very low.
Wachtberg - Beekeeper Association President Torsten Ellmann spoke of a "lean harvest year".
The main reason for this was the bad weather: “In many places it was too cool and too wet.
The bees did not fly out very often and urgently needed the small amounts of nectar they brought in, ”says Ellmann.
However, there were regional differences: the harvest in the north and east was better than in the south and west of Germany.
The harvest figures come from the survey carried out twice a year by the specialist center for bees and beekeeping in Mayen.
1565 beekeepers in North Rhine-Westphalia participated in the query for this year's early costume and 1352 for the summer costume.

The crop cut refers to the survey reports from beekeepers who have harvested honey.
However, many beekeepers did without the harvest this year and instead left the honey in the hive so that the bee colonies could take care of themselves adequately.
