Rhineland-Palatinate: Cold weather causes honey harvest to decline

Beekeepers in Rhineland-Palatinate harvested significantly less honey this year. The reason for this is the wet and cold weather in spring and summer, said Jochen Dörr, honey chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate beekeeping association in Neustadt. For example, the blooming time of the acacias was over after ten days due to the heavy rain.

Neustadt - According to a study by the German Beekeeping Association, which was published on Tuesday, each bee colony in Rhineland-Palatinate produced an average of 24.4 kilos.

In 2020 the harvest was still 36.5 kilos.

This year the harvest can be divided into 12.2 kilos of early garb and 12 kilos of summer garb.

This means that beekeeping in Rhineland-Palatinate is below the national average, which is 28.3 kilos per colony.

Here, too, an average decrease of 5.5 kilos can be observed.

"Many beekeepers in Rhineland-Palatinate would be happy if they were able to harvest approximately 24 kilos per colony," said Dörr.

In general, the earnings situation was very bad this year.

There were major losses on the Rhine plain.

There the rainy season fell directly into the heyday.

In the Saarland, the flowering period only started two weeks later.

In view of the scarce honey supplies, Dörr expects higher prices.

Many beekeepers would not have harvested anything that year.

A higher price would therefore not be enough to compensate for the beekeepers' losses.
