The double efforts made by the potato farmers in the town of Assal al-Ward enabled them to plant 1100 dunums of this material, exceeding the expected area of 700 dunums for the summer harvest season, which they started to earn at the beginning of this month.

The fertility of the town’s land contributed to the farmers’ dependence on the cultivation of potatoes as a main crop to secure their livelihood income, according to the statements of a number of them to the delegate of SANA. The farmer, Ahmed Shaddad, explained while continuing his work on his land that he has been cultivating potatoes for 25 years, as it is the source of his livelihood and support for his family, indicating that he was able to cultivate about 40 dunums This season and that the production of one acre ranges between “4 and 5” tons, according to the care provided during cultivation, as he put it.

“The type of soil in the town helps to produce the best types of potatoes, such as spunta,” according to the opinion of farmer Mowaffaq Shaddad, adding that the snow water stored in the ground gives it a distinctive flavor, salinity and hardness to the potatoes, which allows them to be stored for long periods and increase the demand for them, especially by restaurants, expressing his hope that the potatoes will be available Larger quantities of diesel and subsidized seed for potato farmers to reduce their burdens and contribute to increasing production.

The farmer, Muhammad Abdul Razzaq Haider, considered that production this season is good and its prices are acceptable to some extent in light of the high production costs such as diesel and transportation fees, calling for paying more attention to agricultural roads in Assal Al-Ward, paving and asphalting them to facilitate the farmers’ access to their lands.

Amina Al-Hamad, Manar Al-Hassan and Jazia Othman are eagerly awaiting the potato planting season, because they come with their families from outside the town to work in harvesting the crop in the rose honey, as their production is large from the material and they can earn a good income.

The farmers in the town, including 135 potato farmers.

The head of the Agricultural Association, Marwan Khalouf, pointed out that the lack of rain during the planting period constituted a burden on the farmers, because they were forced to buy diesel at high prices to provide the necessary irrigation for potatoes, in addition to the insufficient quantities of fertilizer distributed by the association, stressing that the farmer works day and night to overcome all difficulties.
