Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) insists on a high pace of broadband expansion in Germany.
Even a new federal government - regardless of the constellation - must have the equality of living conditions in town and country at the top of the agenda, said Scheuer on Tuesday at a festive event in Neschwitz near Bautzen.
Neschwitz - You have seen how important digital participation is. With every kilometer of fiber optic you create opportunities for participation. “We want gigabits always and everywhere in Germany.” The rural areas have a lot of catching up to do, and now we are making a real step forward.
In the Bautzen district, the nationwide largest expansion project directed by Telekom and, to a small extent, by Sachsen Energie was officially completed on Tuesday.
In the process, 12,000 kilometers of optical fiber were laid and around 60,000 households and companies in 55 municipalities were connected to the high-speed Internet.
According to the district, the total costs were around 200 million euros.
In connection with Bautzen, Scheuer spoke of one of the largest projects of this type in Europe.
A total of 12 billion euros in federal funds are available for broadband funding in Germany, nine billion of which have been approved.
Nationwide there are 2400 expansion projects for 2.7 million connections.

“We will see a change in the world of work.
We won't just sit in the office in the metropolitan regions and in the big cities during the week, ”said Scheuer, emphasizing the importance of digitization.
Germany is a "gigabit society" and the district of Bautzen is at the forefront.
In the words of the Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU), broadband expansion is an essential prerequisite for companies to grow and new ones to settle.
The district of Bautzen approached the project with great verve.
This is now also a question of structural change in connection with the coal phase-out.
“It is a huge opportunity that Lausitz has never had before.
Let's make something out of it, ”said Kretschmer.
