Herrsching - Not long ago at 9 o'clock in the St. Nikolauskirche: Gradually the pews filled, there was a hint of excitement in the air. The latter was probably related to the cameras that were waiting in front of the altar to be used. And with the technical team, who wired the protagonists and who would later ensure the good sound. All of this was necessary so that the ZDF could broadcast the Catholic service of the parish association Ammersee-Ost von Herrsching live in the living rooms of around one million viewers.

The request came at relatively short notice and we agreed spontaneously, ”said Dean Simon Rapp to the Starnberg district messenger.

Short term means July.

Since September the dean has been preparing the service with eight volunteers.

Rehearsals had been going on for three days, the process was fine-tuned and the dress rehearsal took place on Saturday.

Editor Elvira Stolzenberger answered briefly and succinctly why the choice fell on Herrsching again:

“Because we liked it so much here.” Because the 30 TV people knew what to expect in the Ammerseegemeinde: In 2019 the traditional TV service of the station took place in St. Nikolauskirche.

A few things will be a bit strange today, ”Dean Simon Rapp announced to the believers before things got serious. The visitors prayed while standing so that the kneelers that were folded down did not interfere with the acoustics. Communion was also interrupted so that the sender's schedule could be met. Strictly speaking, the service could last a maximum of 44 minutes and 30 seconds. Christiane Landwehr from the Catholic editorial team asked those present not to look directly into the camera. "Otherwise they look directly into the living room of the audience," she explained. Retouching or cutting out is no longer possible live. Elisabeth Schmidt and her ensemble took on the musical design. "We would be very happy if you dare to sing along vigorously," she asked. And the 40 or so parishioners sang along heartily, after some had quickly grabbed a songbook.

The service started at 9:30 a.m. - and the excitement evaporated. At times it even seemed as if the churchgoers had forgotten the cameras. They watched the sermon with fascination, which - not only in times of pandemics - revolved around an omnipresent topic: How do I deal with the many rules in our society? Simon Rapp recalled the German peculiarity of wanting to have everything under control. “Let go and trust God” was his advice to go through life more easily. And there was no question that Genovera Sturm, Johann Shamshoum and Joshua Dumpert exuded a very special magic on this Sunday. The three acolytes from Herrsching and Inning, who celebrated first communion this year, mastered the intercessions wonderfully with their engaging, childlike charm.

Ten seconds ahead of time, the fair was over - and director Matthias Schwab was thrilled.

"It went very well and everyone really participated," the director praised the protagonists.

For the 23 volunteers on the phone, work was just beginning: the line was open until 3 p.m.

They are an important part of the television service, because "many viewers are older and are happy to be spoken to," Landwehr knew.

Up to 500 calls were typically received.

Simon Rapp had definitely enjoyed the live stream: "It was a lot of fun again."

The contribution is available in the ZDFmediathek.
