The three ??? and the secret of the traffic light

2021-10-12T16:09:12.412Z

How the three general secretaries want to solve the riddle of the red-yellow-green soundings - and what posts they could get in a new government. How Germany is embarrassing itself when it comes to digitization. And how the Kurz party smeared in Austria. That is the situation on Tuesday evening.

1.

Research and archive

42 years ago today »The Super Parrot« appeared: Justus Jonas, Peter Shaw and Bob Andrews solved when the three ???

her first radio play case.

It was a different time, a different world: "As far as the content was concerned, we initially only had a telephone, then the answering machine was added, and later even a very modern fax," said spokesman Oliver Rohrbeck once.

“We're Googling now.

And Bob no longer has to go to his father in the newspaper archives to do research. ”When the three detectives began their work, a coalition of the SPD and FDP was still ruling the federal government.

The general debate

At the moment, it looks very much that both parties will soon be forming the federal government again, together with the Greens. Today the three general secretaries made a first official statement on the exploratory talks (before you write emails: Yes, the Greens say the federal manager). Lars Klingbeil from the SPD and Michael Kellner from the Greens expressed their confidence, while Volker Wissing from the FDP seemed more cautious: the "moment of truth" was still ahead. By Friday, the three want to create a "basis for decision-making" with which they could recommend their respective bodies to start formal coalition negotiations.

Translated into radio play German: Die Drei ??? and the secret of the traffic light. Michael, Volker and Lars have to solve the riddle of the debt brake and track down billions for modernization where none are. And the horror of the red lines always threatens. My colleague Valerie Höhne and my colleagues Jonas Schaible and Christoph Schult from our capital city office have researched who the three detectives are, what they stand for and what could become of them if they found a coalition. In their report it says: Kellner, Klingbeil and Wissing "could get interesting jobs in the new government, in any case none of them want to remain Secretary General for long".

  • Accordingly,

    Klingbeil is toying

with the Ministry of Defense, perhaps also with the party leadership.

Even his opponents in the SPD show him respect for the successful election campaign.

  • The lawyer and attorney

    Wissing

could become Minister of Justice, but could also be considered for the departments of agriculture, transport or economics.

  • And

    Kellner

is the only relevant Green, about whom it is said that he is interested in both the party chairmanship, which will probably be filled at the beginning of the year, and the parliamentary group chairmanship.

"It's an unequal trio that came together on the occasion of the traffic light explorations," report Valerie, Jonas and Christoph.

But the chemistry is right, you talk to each other.

And maybe Germany will make the leap from fax to Google under a traffic light government.

Few ones, many zeros

Digitization has not yet worked with the digital driver's license: A week before the federal election, Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer (CSU) presented the ID wallet to the public, a digital wallet in which proof of the driver's license should be stored.

"Almost a week later, it disappeared again from the Apple and Google app stores," reports my colleague Patrick Beuth from our Netzwelt department.

Good idea, bad ID

This was due, among other things, to security concerns expressed by members of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC): On the one hand, there were apparently gaps in the app's architecture so that attackers could have pretended to be the operator.

On the other hand, data and identity theft may have been possible.

"However, that did not apply to the driver's license check, but only to other application scenarios for the ID Wallet, such as digital checking-in at the hotel," writes Patrick.

Patrick says he does not fundamentally reject the federal government's digitization efforts: "On the contrary, I am very much in favor of catching up with countries like Angola.

But can't we just write out a project that relies as much on the trust of citizens as an electronic proof of identity, cleanly and transparently develop? «The Corona warning app shows that something like this is possible in Germany in principle .

It seems to me that Germany has few ones but many zeros.

The survey marks in Austria

Let's switch to Austria: A few days after the resignation of Sebastian Kurz and one day after the swearing-in of the new Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, there is an arrest in the corruption affair that triggered the political earthquake.

The Kurz team is also said to have done surveys, according to an allegation by the corruption prosecutors (Kurz denies that).

A co-accused pollster has now been arrested - there is a risk of blackout.

Shortly before the house searches in the context of the affair, the woman is said to have erased the hard drive of her computer, as reported by our cooperation partner »Der Standard«.

The judiciary now wants to investigate the allegations.

“A survey that has now appeared in the› Kronen Zeitung ‹that had not previously attracted critical reports on Kurz is viewed with suspicion,” says my colleague Oliver Das Gupta.

The survey is based on online surveys and it is unclear who commissioned it - "a classic case of Austrian lack of transparency".

However, the values of the survey are remarkable, precisely because it is the first opinion poll since the corruption affair began: According to this, the Chancellor party ÖVP has fallen by more than ten points and is on par with the previously badly battered SPÖ.

What else is important today

  • First steel company calls for government aid:

electricity prices for industry are ten times higher than three years ago.

Now the head of the Swiss Steel Group is calling for relief.

The federal government must cap the prices - otherwise there is a threat of production stops.

  • Curevac stops first corona vaccine candidate:

In studies, the effectiveness was disappointing, now Curecvac is withdrawing its first vaccine from the approval process.

A second candidate is already in the works.

  • Lufthansa passengers should be at the airport four hours before departure:

If you are flying with Lufthansa from the capital city BER this week, you should be at the counter

    four hours in advance

    .

There are probably several reasons for the chaos at the airport.

  • Missing eight-year-old found alive:

The Czech police announce “excellent news”: The eight-year-old missing on Mount Čerchov has been found.

She will be handed over to rescue workers.

  • Suddenly they are talking about the title again:

His record as national coach is flawless: Under Hansi Flick, the national team seems convinced of itself again - and calls out big goals.

It is completely open whether it is good enough for this.

My favorite magazine today: Your SPIEGEL

School is much more than a lesson: there is talk during the breaks, friendships are formed, and when teachers do their job well, learning can be really fun.

Mastering everyday school life is often more difficult than learning the material.

Why do you get along with one teacher, but keep clashing with the other teacher?

How do you manage to motivate yourself even with boring topics?

And why did a group suddenly form that you don't belong to?

Some questions that also play a role in one or the other editorial team.

In the current issue, »Dein SPIEGEL« provides tips that will help you master these challenges better.

A test can be used to find out what type of learner you are and which learning strategies work best.

The news magazine for children is available at the kiosk from today.

What we recommend today at SPIEGEL +

  • How US companies rush ahead and introduce compulsory vaccinations:

US President Biden is urging companies to force their employees to get corona immunization.

Some of them are already resolute in the matter.

    Is the pressure working?

And what does that mean for the job market?

  • "Our government is at a kind of war with the values of the EU":

Tens of thousands of people take to the streets in Poland to demonstrate against the threat of leaving the EU.

Here four of them tell how much is at stake for them.

  • "It felt gigantic": In the

end it was quiet around him, too quiet: In January, fashion designer Harald Glööckler will move into the jungle camp.

About someone who keeps reinventing himself - and yet is never finished.

Which is less important today

  • First the end, then the house:

    The rapper

    Kanye West

, 44, wants to sell one of his two ranches in Wyoming, as reported by “People” and “Daily Mail” among others.

Accordingly, the property, the so-called Monster Lake Ranch, should cost eleven million dollars.

Earlier this year, it became known that his marriage to reality star

    Kim Kardashian

, 40, was over: she filed for divorce.

About two years ago she said on the TV show about the Rocky Mountains area that it was "the most beautiful place you have ever seen in your life."

Typo of the day

, corrected in the meantime: "Today Linn is a freshman again, but it is also a special day for many other students."

Cartoon of the Day:

Is Legalization Coming?

And tonight?

/ And on the weekend?

If the peace of the family lasts, you could play a board game again.

Maybe a classic like "Monopoly" or "Risk".

Or is it an exit game where you feel like one of the three ???, even if your father-in-law wrinkles his forehead at the suggestion?

You could be inspired by the report of my colleague Hendrik Breuer, who reports on the most interesting board games that will be presented at the game days in Essen (the fair itself starts the day after tomorrow under Corona conditions).

In this sense: Yes, we Catan!

Have a nice evening.
