UN panel rejects petition by social activist Greta Tonberg and others for alleged violation of children's rights as a result of inaction in the face of the climate crisis • The international organization has argued that they should have filed a complaint beforehand in local courts


The global green camp suffered a blow on Tuesday after the UN Commission on the Rights of the Child (CRC) rejected the petition filed in 2019 by 15 environmental activists aged eight to 17 centered on an argument against Argentina, Barzilai, Germany, Turkey and France for failing to take action on In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in their areas even though they were aware of the dangers involved and thus led to harm to children.

The panel of 18 human rights experts admitted that there was a "sufficient causal link" between greenhouse gas emissions and child harm but ultimately accepted the argument of states that minors should first file a lawsuit in a local court in their countries.

"You have succeeded in some aspects but not in other aspects," the committee members wrote to the activists in a letter emphasizing the "courage and determination" of the activists.

"I have no doubt that this ruling will haunt the commission in the future," U.S. Petitioner Alexandria Villasnour said last night after the decision was made.

"When the climate disasters are more severe than they are today, the commission will deeply regret that it did not do the right thing when they had the opportunity to do so."

As mentioned, the petition included representatives of several countries, led by Tonberg (18), the social activist from Sweden who became a cultural symbol for the fight against the climate crisis with angry speeches against world leaders.
