Will skyscrapers soon rise into the sky in Munich? Two towers are planned for the parcel post hall area. But there is protest.

Will skyscrapers soon rise into the sky in Munich?

Two towers are planned for the parcel post hall area.

But there is protest.

Munich - Munich is growing - possibly soon also upwards?

The two high-rise buildings planned for the parcel post hall area are to rise 155 meters into the sky.

There is now opposition to this.

“Alpine panorama instead of high-rise drama” is written on the flyers that are currently being distributed.

In it, opponents urge to write to Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter: "Prevent the construction of the high-rise buildings in Nymphenburg-Neuhausen", it says in the sample letter.

Because the two towers would block an important cold air stream, shade neighboring residential areas, lead to increased traffic and create no affordable living space.

This is also feared by critic Wolfgang Czisch.

"We believe that another referendum is necessary," he says.

Generally against all high-rise plans.

“The preparations are already under way,” he reports.

The next steps for the protest action could already take place in the coming weeks.

High-rise buildings in Munich: There was already a referendum in 2004

In 2004 there was already a referendum in Munich: At that time, a slim majority was in favor of no high-rise buildings being allowed to tower over the towers of the Frauenkirche.

This limited the height of the building to 100 meters.

There is also a long-term study on the subject in the city that is currently being updated.

The architects of the towers at the parcel post hall argue that they “fit into the tradition of other buildings in Munich”.

A citizen's report is currently taking place on the area: 126 randomly selected Munich residents spend four days studying the area and can contribute their opinion.

The report is to be completed in the first quarter of 2022 and handed over to the mayor and the city.

High-rise debate: Munich mayor Reiter wants to pay attention to the citizens' attitude

"We are still at the very beginning of the discussion," explains Mayor Dieter Reiter.

“The attitude of the citizens will play a major role in this.” He is very excited about the result.

"On this basis, the city council will then decide how to proceed."

That is not enough for Wolfgang Czisch.

“As a layperson, it is difficult to argue against experts and world architects,” he complains.

His fear: "Munich will change completely." A "high-rise city" must be prevented because: "High-rise buildings are unecological and do not solve the housing problem."

Munich is not Frankfurt or Shanghai

Ingeborg Staudenmeyer

He receives support from the Association for Neighborhood Culture Neuhausen-Nymphenburg.

"High-rise buildings do not belong in the outskirts of the inner city," says chairwoman Ingeborg Staudenmeyer.

“Munich is not Frankfurt or Shanghai.” In your opinion, an urban development competition for the parcel post area would have been necessary.

The organizers of the exhibition “Munich from Above” also join the protests and have linked the flyer on their website.

“It won't stay with the two high-rise buildings,” says curator Robert Hölzl.
