New Zealand announced October 16 as Super Saturday, a date when the government is urging any eligible unvaccinated New Zealander to get vaccinated.

But some lucky people will be able to get vaccinated aboard an Air New Zealand 787 jet at Auckland Airport.

People who can sign up for the "Jabaseat" opportunity will not only receive their first injection of the Pfizer vaccine.

They will also get a tour of the Air New Zealand hangar, receive complimentary snacks and beverages served by Air New Zealand crew members and a commemorative boarding pass.

According to a statement issued by the airline, the one-of-a-kind offer is open to anyone in the Auckland area who is eligible for a vaccine, has not yet received it, and can enroll through the national service portal for Air New Zealand.

Once they have registered for their vaccination, they will see "Air New Zealand Jabaseat" as their potential vaccination location.

There will be no charge for the vaccine or the experience, although customers who can reserve the "Jabaseat" will be responsible for getting to and from the airport themselves.

"All people on the Motu (islands) have a role to play in protecting Aotearoa / New Zealand against covid-19 by getting vaccinated, and we are calling for a massive collective effort to make this happen," said Tamati Sheppard-Wipiiti, manager of the equity group of the Covid-19 Vaccines and Immunizations Program of the Ministry of Health, in a press release.

New Zealand isn't the only destination offering COVID-19 vaccines in unusual locations as a way to motivate more people to sign up.

In New York, some people were able to get vaccinated under the famous blue whale at the Natural History Museum, while in Sweden some lucky ones signed up to get vaccinated at the Nobel Prize Banquet Hall in Stockholm.

Thanks to early and rapid border closures and strict closures, New Zealand only had 4,760 diagnosed cases of the coronavirus and 28 deaths, some of the lowest figures in the world.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, approximately 50% of eligible citizens have been fully vaccinated as of October 14.

However, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has stated that the country is ready to move away from its "zero-covid" strategy towards a lifetime of living with the disease.

Other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore and Australia, have taken similar steps in recent months.

Vaccination, and achieving herd immunity, will be a fundamental step in this process.
