Amazon: Around 500 MV companies use the platform

The online retailer and technology giant Amazon previously had a large blank spot in northeast Germany.

That is now over: The newest distribution center was presented in Neubrandenburg.

Neubrandenburg / Rostock - According to its own statements, the world's largest online retailer Amazon now offers a sales platform to 500 companies from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In 2020, goods worth 35 million euros from the northeast were already sold, as a spokesman for the company said on Wednesday in Neubrandenburg at the presentation of the latest Amazon distribution center in Germany. From the location with almost 10,000 square meters of hall space and 180 employees, customers have been supplied between Oranienburg near Berlin to the island of Usedom and south of Rostock for a week.

All planned 180 positions in three-shift operation have already been filled in a short time, but employees are still being sought for the Christmas business, said site manager Phillipp Hecht.

In the course of the corona pandemic, the Neubrandenburger company continues to offer free PCR tests twice a week.

For the most effective delivery possible, the parcels are pre-sorted on tapes by computers with a capacity of around 2800 parcels per tape per hour.

Mayor praises cooperation on Amazon project

The decision of the world's largest online retailer Amazon for Dummerstorf as the location of a large logistics center has, from the point of view of mayor Axel Wiechmann (CDU), two main reasons: the quick availability of the space and the direct motorway connections.

At the end of 2019, they spoke to Amazon for the first time about the major project.

The building permit process went quickly, the construction work had been going on for some time, and a move in is foreseeable.

The drivers receive computer-aided route plans that are precisely tailored to the delivery of the parcels, so that they can travel as effectively as possible.

80 to 100 parcels are delivered per driver and tour - depending on the length and orders.

Neubrandenburg is located in one of the most sparsely populated regions in Germany and closes a large blank area at the online retailer.

A significantly larger logistics center is also currently being built on Autobahn 20 near Dummerstorf (Rostock district), from which the smaller distribution centers are in turn supplied.

A total of around 1450 new jobs are to be created in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The starting wage is 12 euros per hour and should rise to 12.50 euros in 2022, it said.
