Almost every crèche and every kindergarten in the southwest has been able to employ significantly too few staff in the past few months. According to a new study, the shortage was sometimes even serious in around every fifth day care center. "The shortage of staff is worsening, sometimes with dramatic consequences for the children and educational specialists," warned the state chairman of the Association for Education and Upbringing, Gerhard Brand, on Wednesday in Stuttgart.
Stuttgart - According to the nationwide online survey - with over 2,200 day-care center managers from Baden-Württemberg - 88 percent of the day-care centers had to get by in the past twelve months with considerably fewer staff than they need for their supervisory duties. Around 18 percent of daycare managers reported that this was the case 40 percent of the time. Overtime and unsafe guidelines in the corona pandemic would have increased the burden, Brand said.
Almost every second day care center also reports that staff are being hired who previously would not have been hired "because of a lack of accuracy of fit".
Because of the high workload, many skilled workers were absent, said Brand, the number of sick leave is increasing.
The group sizes are also not suitable for children everywhere.
The VBE called for a significant increase in the number of staff, in addition, the training for interested youngsters had to be more attractive and the work for the day-care center managers had to be made easier.
