The Stuttgart Regional Court sends the attackers to prison for a longer period of time.

Stuttgart - Because they brutally beat down several men on the sidelines of a "lateral thinker" demonstration in Stuttgart, two young people from the left-wing scene were sentenced to long prison terms.

Judge Johannes Steinbach said on Wednesday that we were dealing with a "very sad case".

The two defendants were ideologically blinded and had committed a serious crime.

The 21-year-old was sentenced to four and a half years and the 26-year-old to five and a half years in prison.

Questioning of witnesses in the Dresden trial of left-wing extremist violence

The trial of suspected violent criminals from the left-wing scene continued on Monday at the Dresden Higher Regional Court with an initial questioning of witnesses.

On October 2, 2018, a young woman had seen four hooded men near her home in Leipzig, who immediately afterwards attacked and beat a right-wing extremist.

However, she stated in court that she had not recognized any details because hedges blocked the view of the crime scene.

Stone throwing trial: prosecution sees attempted murder

A man in Swabia is said to have thrown several stones from a bridge onto a motorway in order to kill motorists there.

The 42-year-old denies that. A circumstantial process should now bring clarity - also to a possible motive.

Stone throwing trial: prosecution sees attempted murder

From a group of 20 to 50 dark-clad people, three men were beaten up in May 2020 who wanted to go to a demonstration against the corona measures of the then state government.

Some of the victims were seriously injured.

A man has been almost blind in one eye since then.

Another suffered a fractured skull and was in a coma for some time after the attack.

All three victims work for the car company Daimler and are members of the works council of the right-wing union “Zentrum Automobil”.

Steinbach said they belonged to an "obscure small trade union".

The accused had gone too far and presumed to attack the opposing group.

The two men did not provide any information about the allegations in the proceedings.

The court based its conviction on circumstantial evidence.

A DNA trace found on the 21-year-old's glove was attributed to one of the victims.

Steinbach said the court ruled out the transmission of traces.

The other defendant's hair was discovered on an irritant gas cartridge found at the crime scene.

The younger of the two defendants was also found nearby by the police shortly after the crime, the judge said.

The defense had criticized improper forensic evidence and therefore demanded acquittal.

The prosecution had assumed attempted manslaughter in their indictment and requested a slightly higher sentence.

But because that could not be proven, the regional court convicted the duo of dangerous bodily harm, serious bodily harm and breach of the peace in a particularly serious case.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.
