The collapse of the Cologne city archive shook nationwide.

Two residents died in the disaster in March 2009. Do the acquittals by two construction managers stand?

The Federal Court of Justice decides.

Karlsruhe - More than twelve years after the Cologne city archive collapsed with two dead, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) announced its decision on the acquittals of two construction managers on Wednesday (3 p.m.).

The men had been acquitted of the accusation of negligent homicide by the Cologne Regional Court around three years ago.

From the judges' point of view, the men had violated duties of care.

But this was not the cause of the disaster.

The public prosecutor's office appealed against the judgment.

The BGH negotiated this in July of this year.

The representative of the Federal Public Prosecutor had described the Cologne judgment as consistently flawed in law, but the defense as well-founded.

Now it is the turn of the BGH judges.

Two young men were killed in the collapse on March 3, 2009.

Huge damage occurred and countless historical documents were buried.

The accident occurred in connection with construction work for a subway station in the immediate vicinity of the archive.

The wall of an excavation pit had not been created properly and large amounts of groundwater seeped in.

Sand, earth, and water poured into the pit.

A cavity was created under the neighboring buildings.

The archive and two apartment buildings collapsed.
