The autumn terraces followed. The Lion Rock and the compasses that recently struck Hong Kong were "blessed" by the strong northeast monsoon. The tropical cyclone caused Hong Kong to issue two strong monsoon signals commonly known as the "black ball", and then directly "jumped" and hoisted. Typhoon Signal No. 3 and then upgraded to Typhoon Signal No. 8 brought severe weather, but the intensity and impact were slightly different.

The two storms also set new records. The latest No. 8 typhoon signal brought by the compass took effect for 23 hours and 20 minutes, becoming the fifth longest on record, and Lion Rock became the longest-lived No. 8 southeast gale or storm signal.

Lion Rock is only up to tropical storm level. It was originally predicted to bring strong wind signal No. 3 to Hong Kong at most. However, when Hainan Island landed on Hainan Island and gradually moved away from Hong Kong, under the combined influence of the northeast monsoon, the wind in Hong Kong increased unabated.

The Observatory issued typhoon signal No. 8 on the morning of last Saturday (9th). At that time, the distance between Lion Rock and Hong Kong was 560 kilometers. 100 kilometers.

As for the compasses, the Observatory has already predicted that it can reach the typhoon level, and it rarely announced at the Monday press conference. From Tuesday evening to early Wednesday, the wind in Hong Kong will be further strengthened. The wind may reach gale force in some areas, depending on wind changes and the latest weather. It is predicted that the No. 8 storm or gale signal may be changed by then.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Observatory issued the No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal. At that time, Compasses, which was still a severe tropical storm, gathered within about 500 kilometers of Hong Kong. Today, it intensified into a typhoon and reached a range of 400 kilometers, which is closer to Hong Kong than Lion Rock.

The path of Lion Rock is erratic, "falling waves" and the time is inaccurate

Regarding the time of the "wave", although the Lion Rock stayed on Hainan Island last Saturday, the wind in Hong Kong continued to increase, and the moving speed of the Lion Rock was not as expected, which made the Observatory’s prediction of the "wave falling" time on that day inaccurate. The forecast will be changed six times within half a day.

In the end, this "wave 8" took effect for a total of 22 hours, becoming the longest-lived "No. 8 southeast gale or storm signal."

Afterwards, the observatory director Cheng Chuming described the erratic path of the "Lion Rock". It was originally expected that there would be a chance to re-issue the strong wind signal No. 3 last Saturday afternoon, but it was counterproductive and the wind was maintained due to the influence of the extensive rainband.

On the contrary, the compass gradually forced Hong Kong yesterday. The Observatory issued the No. 8 northeast gale or storm signal in the afternoon. Today, it is far away from Hong Kong and landed on Hainan Island. The wind in Hong Kong has further weakened. The signal, which lasted 23 hours and 40 minutes, became the fifth longest No. 8 typhoon signal since 1946.

Chen Baiwei, Assistant Director of the Observatory, explained that the movement of the compass is relatively stable. The observatory can already see its movement and intensity changes in the forecast tool, and give an early warning.

Lion Rock brings the highest rainfall in a single day in October

In terms of rainfall, Lion Rock brought squally showers for several days. Red and black rainstorm warnings were issued in the morning of last Friday (8th). Before the red rain took effect, the collapse of the scaffolding at Happy Valley Road led to the unfortunate death of female workers.

The Observatory said that more than 200 mm of rainfall was recorded in general areas that day, and 329.7 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Observatory’s headquarters, breaking the record for the highest rainfall in a single day in October.

During the period when the compass struck Hong Kong, the scene of cross wind and rain was not as good as Lion Rock, but today the rainfall has increased significantly. An amber rainstorm warning was issued, and special weather warnings have been issued. It is expected that there will be heavy rain with an hourly rainfall exceeding 70 mm, and severe flooding may occur.

Hurricane was recorded in Cheung Chau when the wind is very different

During the Lion Rock’s invasion of Hong Kong, citizens have to fight the wind and rain when they go out.

When the Lion Rock moves slowly to the west-southwest of Hong Kong, Ngong Ping, located in the southwest of Lantau Island, is the most windy.

According to wind speed data from the Observatory, Ngong Ping recorded a maximum sustained wind speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour at many times last Saturday. The wind was strongest in the afternoon. The maximum sustained wind speed reached the hurricane level from 2:30 to 4:30, including 3:00 in the afternoon. The maximum continuous wind speed from half to half past four is 126 kilometers per hour, the wind is equal to the No. 10 typhoon, and the maximum gust reaches 154 kilometers per hour.

The wind force brought by the compass is the most obvious today. Tate’s Cairn is the most windy in the early morning. The wind speed has reached the level of a hurricane. The highest continuous wind speed is 119 kilometers per hour, and the highest wind gust reaches 153 kilometers per hour. Then it turns gradually in the morning. With easterly winds, the areas previously blocked by the barriers will become more windy, and storm or gale levels have been recorded in many areas.

Among them, Cheung Chau Beach recorded the highest gust of 119 kilometers per hour (that is, hurricane level) in the early morning. Tap Mun still did not reach strong winds in the early hours of this morning, but after turning easterly, the highest sustained wind speed soared to per hour this morning. 75 kilometers (that is, up to the gale level).

Although the two tropical cyclones are both affected by the monsoon, their intensity is quite different.

The Hong Kong Meteorological Society spokesperson Liang Rongwu explained that both Lion Rock and the northeast monsoon are blowing easterly, and the combination of the two forms a "strong easterly wind", and the strong rain band makes the superimposed effect stronger; on the contrary, the compass and the monsoon wind direction are not exactly the same. The superimposed effect is weaker, and the dry northerly air stream weakens the rain band, so it feels inferior to the Lion Rock.
