Lapid meets with Harris: We agree that Palestinians should have a good life and hope (Edit: Aviad Ballali)

The reactions to the decision of the local planning and construction committee regarding and its approval today (Wednesday) of the expropriation of 200 dunams of land in Givat Hamatos, were not long in coming.

MK Musi Raz (Meretz) called the committee’s approval a “serious incident.” Raz added that “construction on the plane hill is destructive, and I believe the district committee will not approve it.

If construction is approved - it would be a mistake that would hurt Israeli citizens. "

The message OK confiscation comes just one day after a meeting between Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, Washington. At the meeting, Lapid said opening statement that his visit is aimed at strengthening support for the report - Partisan in Israel. "Even when we have disagreements, we know that our goal is the same.

We also agree that the Palestinians should have a good life and hope. "

The Peace Now movement responded to the apparent contradiction between the messages: "The change government speaks with two contradictory voices. While it boasts 'agreements on a political status quo', it continues to promote construction in the most politically explosive places. "And to harm a future political solution. The dangerous plan must be shelved on the hill of the plane that is placed in the dustbin of history."

The Rock of Controversy - The area outside the Green Line.

In Givat Hamatos, which is across the Green Line, there are plans to build public buildings and pave roads for construction in this area.

Construction on Givat Hamatos is a controversial issue, as it will cut off a territorial continuum of the Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.

This opposition joins the opinion of the international community which is reluctant to promote development plans in this area.

In 2014, the district committee approved the plan to build about 2,600 housing units, but the plan was put on hold for years due to international pressures and the tender for the approved plan was not published.

The plan will include ten complexes and 38 public housing units and commercial construction.

Last year, the Israel Land Authority published the tender booklet for the construction of 1,257 housing units in the Givat Hamatos neighborhood in southeast Jerusalem.

This, after the tender was postponed for a long time.

According to the tender brochure, the bids could be submitted up to a few days after Joe Biden was sworn in as President of the United States.

EU Foreign Minister Joseph Burrell condemned the publication of the tender, saying he was "very concerned about the move, which is likely to hurt the chances of establishing a Palestinian state with territorial continuity."
