In the year-long dispute over the wild bison herd in the Rothaar Mountains, a laboriously achieved transitional compromise is off the table.
Those involved in the region and the country agreed in March 2019 that they wanted to keep the wild animals in a limited area, mostly in the state forest - a fence that was permeable to other animals should surround the area.
Bad Berleburg / Düsseldorf - It had become clear "that the planned fence solution will not be able to be implemented by regional consensus even for a period limited to three to five years," said a spokesman for the NRW Environment Ministry on Wednesday.
It was recently agreed not to “pursue the proposed fence solution”.
The agricultural specialist publication "Wochenblatt" had previously reported.
Nothing was known about the exact reasons.
When asked, a spokesman for the species protection project said that there had been discussions about the concrete implementation and the exact course of the fence since spring 2019.
You never got beyond the planning phase.
How the species protection project will continue in the future is still open, according to the NRW Ministry of the Environment.
An expert opinion, which should record possible paths and serve as a basis for decision-making, has not yet been completed, but should be published this year.

European bison are the largest land mammals in Europe.
After they were considered extinct in Germany for a long time, Germany's only wild bison herd has been settled in the Rothaargebirge.
Most recently, just over 20 animals roamed the forests.
A legal dispute about the species protection project has been going on for years.
Forest owners complain that the animals gnaw off tree bark and cause them such great financial damage.
Most recently, the Hamm Higher Regional Court decided in a judgment that was not yet final that the foresters would no longer have to accept this damage.
The sponsoring association of the bison project has appealed against it.
All those involved are well advised to continue working constructively on a solution, the state environment ministry said on Wednesday.
