Former Hamburg mayor Ole von Beust has spoken out against a member's decision on the future party chairmanship in his CDU.
"I'm not a big fan of member votes," he told the "world" (Thursday).
“The temptation to use phone calls, interviews, or exerting influence to steer the decision in one direction or the other” is rather greater than when delegates are sent to a party congress.

On the other hand, he could imagine a member's vote to nominate a joint candidate for chancellor from the CDU and CSU.
“They don't have a joint party congress.
With a primary election, such a grueling process like the one we recently experienced could perhaps be avoided. ”Dpa
