Flea market all over the place.

There was now that in Benediktbeuern.

Hundreds of shoppers strolled through the streets at the first courtyard flea market in the municipality, looking from stand to stand and maybe discovering something.

Benediktbeuern - In total there were over a hundred stands, which were often well stocked.

From the soap to the cylinder, from the surfboard to the icon of saints, there was almost everything that anyone could use and someone else no longer needed.

If you didn't have a map, you just followed the balloons

Even Lara Nabholz and Maxi Häusinger couldn't say exactly how many took part, because some Benediktbeurers spontaneously set up a table in front of their house or garage.

The two students at the Catholic Foundation University organized the day.

They invited people to participate via posters and flyers, passed on information and made sure that the site maps, marked with many red dots, were displayed.

And if you didn't have a map yet, you could just follow the balloons that were attached to many stands.

The constantly changing corona regulations had caused them difficulties in planning.

That is why the flea market day originally planned for June only took place now.

For the organizers, who are big flea market fans themselves, this day was the result of their third practical work as part of their "Social Work."

Many see the flea market as a "return to social life"

They got the idea about a year ago when they went to a flea market in Riederau am Ammersee, Lara Nabholz's hometown.

It was there that the idea of organizing something like this for Benediktbeuern came up, explains Maxi Häusinger, who originally comes from Nuremberg.

Especially in this time shaped by the corona pandemic, such a garage, yard and garden flea market also offers the opportunity to meet again.

For Bernhard Rauchberger, who himself looked after a stand, the campaign was also a “re-entry into social life”.

And that's exactly what many others have been waiting for with him.

For Sabine Hammerl, who ran one of the “most remote stands” on Utzschneiderstrasse, chatting with friends and visitors was at least as important as selling.

Sometimes, as with Julia Mach, people simply swapped from stand to stand.

And if you didn't want to buy anything, you got your money's worth, because at many stalls some of the goods were even free.

"You don't even believe what comes up when you clean up the cellar again," said Renate Karletz, who was happy to see or get to know her neighbors again.

The most original offer: the eternal Christmas tree

Elaine Warmington had also waited a long time for the flea market.

"I think it's a shame to throw things away that someone else might need," she said.

In addition, every flea market reminds her of England, where she originally came from.

"You do that all the time there."

Christoph Köck had perhaps the most original offer: the eternal Christmas tree that he discovered while tidying up.

It is not known whether he still got the desired 50 cents for the rather battered and abundantly brown tree.

The yard flea market is to be repeated in the coming year

All in all, the prices were pretty fair that day - a little higher in the town center than on the outskirts, and physical well-being was also taken care of.

In any case, the initiators were very satisfied with the positive feedback from visitors and stand operators.

Unfortunately, one waited in vain for the sun this Sunday.

But you could easily buy a winter coat or a pair of gloves.

What about next year?

The two organizers definitely want to “pass on” the project so that there will also be a flea market day in Benediktbeuern in 2022.
