The poor result in the Bundestag election apparently also concerns those in the CDU who have long since withdrawn from active politics.
After ten years of political abstinence, Hamburg's former First Mayor Ole von Beust (CDU) named reasons for the decline of his party in an interview with Die Welt.
Von Beust speaks of three building blocks that "make a major difference to the success and failure of the CDU."
So the people would have to trust the party to govern sensibly.
There have recently been deficits.
"The far too slow pace of digitization, the condition of the railways and the future of the social systems" are just a few examples where the party did not give any clear answers.
"Prosperity for All" as the headline
Attitude is the second building block.
In the end, the CDU would not have broadcast decency and reliability continuously.
And third: the programmatic content.
The broad heading would still be »Prosperity for All«, according to von Beust.
This included economic competence, the promise of promotion, taking care of the little people, and making sure that everyone got a chance.
The party would not win an election only with issues such as internal security, restrictive migration policy or the waiver of tax increases.
Hamburg's former mayor believes that the district chairmen of the CDU should be involved in the decision on how the base will be integrated in the future. When clarifying the question of the new CDU boss, he himself advocates a party congress and not a primary election of the members. "The temptation to use phone calls, interviews and influence to steer the decision in one direction or the other" is too great.
He himself has no favorite for the post.
But there is a considerable difference between becoming chairman of a ruling party or chairman of an opposition party.
“A government always dictates to a certain extent what is currently being debated within a party that supports it.
In the opposition, on the other hand, parties must use the opportunity to raise their profile programmatically and at the same time bring out good people who have the potential to form the next government. "
