An Indian man was convicted this week of murdering his wife by biting a cobra snake and sent to double life imprisonment. Suraj Kumar was arrested last year in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala after his wife, Uthra, died of a snake bite. Police began an investigation after her family claimed she was murdered and said Suraj harassed them for dowry.
On Monday, a court ruled that he released the snake in bed last May while his 25-year-old wife slept in it. Her family suspected it was a deliberate act because only a few weeks earlier she had been bitten by a viper. Police said the investigation revealed that Surage was behind the two attempts. She also arrested a man who helped him purchase the snakes, who later cooperated with her and helped her decipher the case.
According to a local website, the police indictment was detailed over a thousand pages and the prosecution demanded the death penalty because it is a "very rare case".
The judge agreed that this was an exceptional case and sentenced Double Surah to life imprisonment.
In addition, he was fined half a million rupees ($ 6,635).
