How are things going now?

Berlin - After several exploratory talks that have lasted for hours, it is still unclear in Berlin who will soon be conducting coalition negotiations with whom.

Immediately after the most recent seven-hour exploratory marathon between the SPD, the Greens and the Left on Tuesday, the Greens parliamentary group leader in the House of Representatives, Bettina Jarasch, announced a "very timely" result in the deliberations.

But that was a long time coming on Wednesday.

The Greens said it was difficult to assess how quickly a decision could be expected.

And by the afternoon there was also nothing to be learned from the other parties in question as to whether and when there could be further exploratory talks or decisions about the recordings of coalition talks.

So far, the election winner SPD and the second-placed Greens have not been able to agree on the essential question of who should come on board as the third coalition partner.

SPD country chief Franziska Giffey had announced last Friday that her party's preference was a traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP.

In contrast, the Greens have always insisted on wanting to continue the previous government coalition with the SPD and the Left.

The fact that on Monday in a circle of three was first explored with the SPD and then on Tuesday with the left did not give a quick answer to the question of how this can be brought together.

Meanwhile, the Berlin tenants' association SPD and Greens warned on Wednesday against entering into a coalition with the FDP.

"The formation of a government coalition with a party that is jointly responsible for the abolition of the rent cap, the abolition of rent controls and milieu protection and who wants to put social housing to the test, would meet with absolute incomprehension among tenants in Berlin," explained Managing Director Reiner Wild .

Rather, the “socially responsible course of urban development” begun under the previous red-red-green Senate must be continued with a social, just and ecological housing, rent and urban policy.

From the Berlin SPD it was said on Wednesday that everything was still in flux during the deliberations on the exploratory results so far.

The Greens have at least decided not to let the party's state committee meet before Friday.

So far, Thursday has also been discussed.

The body officially decides whether to start coalition negotiations.

From the perspective of the left, the SPD and the Greens must now agree on how to proceed.

In the event that the left is involved in the upcoming coalition negotiations, the state executive could make a recommendation on Saturday, which would then be decided by an extraordinary party congress on Sunday.

According to the left, the party congress is already planned and would have to be postponed if there is still no clarity in the next few days - possibly to the following weekend.

According to the party, it is still open whether the FDP will convene a small party congress in the event that it is supposed to be involved in coalition negotiations.

According to the statutes, this is not mandatory.
