Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) does not want to run for Laschet's successor as party leader.
“I'm staying loyal to Saxony,” said the 46-year-old to the “Sächsische Zeitung” (Thursday).
Kretschmer was traded alongside the Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther, and the Saarland, Tobias Hans, as a possible candidate to succeed Armin Laschet.
Dresden - "I have an important task in Saxony that I not only have to fulfill, but want to fulfill," said Kretschmer.
He wanted to continue to advance the country until 2024 in a “difficult alliance”, as he described the coalition of the CDU, Greens and SPD ruling Saxony.

However, Kretschmer left it open whether he would be considered for a CDU deputy.
"I can imagine participating in the reorganization of the CDU," said Kretschmer.
"But that depends on the people who are in front."
He does not yet see a clear favorite for the party chairmanship.
“It's not just about someone coming to the top of the CDU who not only best represents our bourgeois-conservative values”, but who also stands for “a strong and modern way forward in the future”.
