In 30 km / h zones, cycle paths are to be dismantled if this makes sense.

The city council approved a corresponding management concept on Wednesday.

The aim is to make streets more attractive - for pedestrians and restaurant visitors.

Munich's 30 km / h zones will be gradually rebuilt in the coming years: they should become more attractive, more climate-friendly and more citizen-friendly. The city council decided on Wednesday that whenever renovation work is due in 30 km / h zones, it should be checked whether cycle paths can be removed. The cyclists would then drive on the street, the remaining space could be given to pedestrians. Cycle roads should be designated where possible. Any renovation measures should be carried out at the request of the city council in coordination with the district committees.

As reported in the summer, cycle paths, such as those on Augustenstrasse, are too narrow.

They have no safe distance from parking lots and are difficult to see.

This means that they do not meet modern requirements or regulations.

The demolition will not only give pedestrians more space, trees could also be planted or catering areas set up.

Green city councilor Gudrun Lux speaks of "towel cycle paths"

There is no obligation to use cycle paths in 30 km / h zones.

Children up to 8 years of age must, but children up to and including 10 years of age are allowed to drive on the sidewalk.

Therefore, according to the Green City Councilor Gudrun Lux, it is important that it is checked in individual cases whether it makes sense to dismantle a cycle path.

“It is important that we think all road users with us.” If “towel cycle paths” were to be dismantled, safety must come first.

The sidewalks would then have to be wide enough for children to use.

"It would also be safer for them, since the faster cyclists drive on the street." As the administration explains, solutions could also be examined in individual cases in which the cycle paths are retained in sections,

SPD City Councilor Andreas Schuster: "Safety must have top priority"

SPD City Councilor Andreas Schuster told our newspaper: "More safety for cyclists and at the same time more space for those walking: we are making this possible today with our resolution to dismantle outdated cycle paths in 30 km / h zones."

Schuster also says that the safety of cyclists must have top priority for every measure.

Therefore, the dismantling should not be an automatism.

“A cycle path can be the safer option on streets with a high volume of traffic, for example, or on school routes.

Here, the cycle paths should then be expanded in accordance with the rules and in compliance with safety areas. "
