Neta Barzilai: "I was not allowed to release songs for a year and a half and it was terrible" | Israel today

2021-10-13T06:09:13.074Z

The star has had a difficult year: switching between labels has forced her not to release songs, she discovered that life in Los Angeles is not for her and broke up with her partner.

If 2018 was the year of Barzilai’s explosion, 2021 taught her to return to the ground and face a transition between labels that forced her to stop singing for a year and a half;

With separation from spouse after two and a half years, including heartbreak;

And on the way also with the corona, which took her and her fellow singers off the stages.

Now she's free to talk about everything.

"The thought was to move with Ilan to Los Angeles, but then came the corona that finished everything and I got stuck in a country I didn't have fun in, with a man I suddenly didn't connect to his life there," she recalls.

"After two and a half years of being here together and having a lot of fun, suddenly he has another life, all in English, and all the cultural gaps are revealed. I quickly realized I had nothing to do there."

Your plan was to leave the country at all?

"I wanted to move in with him, and probably focus on my music and career as well. I was there for a month, and it was clear from the first ten days that it would not work. I really remember the moment we realized it would not happen, and it was very painful because it was a moment we knew it was love. Not enough".

It is impossible to talk to Barzilai without mentioning the Eurovision Song Contest, but she is not necessarily happy to talk about it.

"Ultimately, it's an evening in my life that I don't want him to define for me everything I did afterwards, no matter how I ended up there. The more you let go of it, the better."

Want to be free already?

"I'm already free, but when you talk to me about it, I do not want it to define everything. Eurovision is competition and achievement, who will win and who will give points to whom, and I am not like that. I want to create and do things, and with partners, because it is much more interesting together. Competition is not a healthy thing. "

After a year and a half of silence, Barzilai is back in full force and this coming Friday she will release two new singles.

“At a time when I couldn’t put out songs I felt like they took my air, and it was shocking,” she recalls.

"I fought that the second we got to the new label, first thing would come out a song. We recorded the song and filmed a clip for it, even before we knew the contract would come true. I just had to do it, mentally, for myself."

In an interview to be published this weekend in the supplement that sat in "Israel Today", she talks about her role as a judge in "The X Factor", about the desire to start a family, about the Photoshop protest and also about the conduct of a dating app when everyone knows you.
