After a nocturnal journey, the elderly elephant cow Saida arrived at her new home at the Karlsruhe Zoo early on Wednesday morning.
The 48-year-old animal traveled in a container on a low-loader from the Leipzig zoo to the retirement home for Asian elephants, as announced by the Karlsruhe zoo.
Karlsrihe - Two zookeepers from Leipzig accompanied Saida, they should stay with her for a few more days.
The elephant cow could now rest first, said zoo director Matthias Reinschmidt.
Saida is said to be the largest elephant in Germany with a weight of 4.6 tons and a shoulder height of 2.93 meters.
Saida's 38-year-old conspecific Jenny gets company with it - she has been alone since the death of 54-year-old Nanda in August.
Saida and Jenny know each other from earlier times in Hamburg's Hagenbeck Zoo.
There, however, they weren't particularly sympathetic.
It is hoped that the two will form a kind of community of convenience and that they will be able to stand together on the facility in the future.
