The leading trend forecasting agencies have assured us that sustainability will be one of the major trends that will also define the field of home design, and this promise is being fulfilled and is gaining deeper and deeper expression in the field.

The recycling trend is deepening further and further, aligning with our desire, consumers, to address the value of sustainability across sectors.

When it comes to home decor, recycling is also saving drink bottles and turning them into toilet paper rolls, but the recycling consciousness has jumped head first into the pool of the greats.

Manufacturers of home appliances are increasingly adopting the recycled agenda and are offering us refrigerators, ovens and coffee machines, which are made from recycled materials and additional industrial waste that is turned back into raw material.

Just for the sake of illustration, those who work in this way manage to recycle more than 1,000 tons of plastic and other materials a year.

Coffee capsules

The used capsules of home coffee machines are a kind of raw material for anything and everything - they are small, colorful and serve artists, creators and even DIY enthusiasts who make works of art from them.

The web is full of tutorial videos that show how to create an infinity of things using coffee capsules.

Some of them, especially from the limited editions, carry special decorations that will add another interesting dimension to the work - from candlesticks, frames for mirrors and pictures and flower pots, to works of art for hanging on the wall.

And what about the unused capsules?

The leading coffee machine companies take care of shredding the empty capsules, which are returned as aluminum for industrial use.

The coffee residue is transferred to ecological fertilizer.

The plastic parts in the oven display are made from 5% recycled fishing nets and 65% industrial waste wires.

Even 50% of its internal display lid is made of industrial waste wires.

Fishing nets and industrial waste

The electrical products industry uses fishing nets and other industrial waste.

There are ovens made from fishing net waste and industrial wire waste, refrigerators that offer egg trays made from excess eggshells, and in advanced refrigerators you can also find door sealing strips and a fan lid based on a combination of biological materials - soybean oil, corn starch and sugar cane.

The attention that recycling receives has significantly raised the level of quality and treatment that shape and finish receive.

The next generation recycled electrical appliances look immaculately designed, with inviting finishes and innovative and up-to-date shapes.

Paper and cotton

The first materials that received attention in the recycling industry were paper and cotton.

If in the past the line was mainly the creation of patchwork from worn-out clothes or paper-based products from old newspapers, then today the developments in the field make it possible to reprocess materials that are no longer used and submit them in a designed and compact manner.

Tires

Vehicle tires are made of rubber compounds that ensure strength and durability.

When a tire goes out of use, some people know how to create a completely different interpretation for it, one that is suitable for the spaces of the private home.

The fashion industry uses recycled tires to make urban-industrial backpacks and handbags.

In the field of home design, the line was further stretched, and today you can find furniture items such as tables, lighting fixtures and seating systems, which incorporate obsolete tires.

Plastic

Plastic can be said to be the star of the recycling industry: first, it is a non-perishable material, so the fact that they have managed to produce so many alternatives from it that serves the field of design, makes one feel that there is hope.

In addition, the plastic is processed in various ways that manage to produce a fit for a variety of designs, which makes it in its recycled version very versatile - like its combination as a lampshade for a light fixture that requires a certain degree of rigidity, compared to another processing method that allows it to become upholstery for sofas.

Plastic in the design worlds serves craft makers as well as leading and veteran brands in the field.

Wood

Recycled wood can be found in use in almost every field when it comes to home decor - from serving utensils to furniture items.

A bit like paper and cotton, recycled wood also stands out, today more than ever, more polished and less coarse finishes.

The recycled wood can come in the form of chests of drawers and other furniture items made from obsolete fishing boats, which then retain the authentic look with peeling and color touches, which were part of the fishermen’s markings on the boats themselves.

The more refined line offers smooth surface treatment, some of which are glossy and at a glance it is difficult to understand that it is wood, and not so much that it is

recycled wood.
