Species extinction at record speed, climate change and the destruction of nature: When it comes to the environment, the pressure on politicians and decision-makers is increasing.

Nevertheless, many scientists do not want to get into the political discussion, says the ecology professor Josef Settele.

Marktoberdorf / Halle - Despite accelerating climate change and dramatic species extinction, according to species researcher Josef Settele, many scientists shy away from talking to politicians.

"This is something that only a few of my colleagues want to do," said the ecology professor at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Halle (Saale).

"Not everyone is in the mood to venture into the shark tank of politics in addition to their actual scientific work."

Politicians now take his concerns about species protection much more seriously than before, said Settele.

"The openness is great across party lines, the interpretation of course different." The most important thing in such discussions is always the beginning, emphasized Settele.

"Once you're inside, you can also bring up other topics."
