A US panel of experts has recommended that people aged 60 and over who are at risk of heart disease should not start taking daily low-dose aspirin to prevent a first heart attack because the risks of internal bleeding outweigh the benefits.
Reuters quoted the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force of 16 independent experts as saying today... Those aged 40 to 59 with no history of heart disease should consult a doctor to decide if aspirin is appropriate for them.”
The team noted that the new recommendation does not include people who have previously had a heart attack or stroke and take a daily aspirin to prevent later cardiovascular complications.
Aspirin, which has been used for decades to relieve pain and fever, and is available over the counter is an easy and cheap option to help those at risk of serious heart problems.
