Algeria's security forces thwarted a planned attack by separatists backed by the "Zionist entity" and a state in North Africa, the local a-Nahar channel reported today (Wednesday). According to the report, 17 members of a separatist group, which was declared a terrorist organization by the authorities, were arrested and seized with documents indicating continuous contact with the "Zionist entity" organizations and with weapons. It was further alleged that the "confessions" of the members of the group, known as MAK, would be published later.
Algeria accused MAK and another separatist group in August of setting off the deadly fire, which killed dozens of people. She claimed that one of them was supported by Morocco and Israel, who had normalized their relations to her displeasure in the past year. Later that month, she severed diplomatic relations with Morocco, recalling, among other things, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid's visit to the kingdom. Last month it decided to close its airspace to all flights from Morocco, civilian and military.
The border between Morocco and Algeria has remained closed since 1994. Relations between neighboring countries have deteriorated since last year, following the resumption of conflict in Western Sahara after years of relative calm.
Morocco sees Western Sahara as an integral part of its territory, but Algeria supports the separatist Polisario movement.
The Trump administration's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty in Western Sahara last year paved the way for normalization with Israel.
