He was fit, he was happy, but then a bad accident happened to him.

Rudolf "Waggi" Schneider fell.

He became known as a funny Moosacher.

Munich - spreading joy and fun: For decades this was the linchpin in the life of Rudolf “Waggi” Schneider (87).

But now his family and friends are very worried about the last living member of the Munich folk singer trio “Die 3 lustigen Moosacher” (Yes, I'm there with my bike).

Schneider has been in a coma since Monday.

While hiking on Lake Walchensee, he suffered a cardiac arrest.

He fell badly and broke his neck.

Schneider was brought to the hospital in Rosenheim by helicopter, where the doctors are fighting for his life.

"Unfortunately it doesn't look good," says his wife Margot (82).

“He had to be put into an artificial coma.

We previously hiked on Walchensee in beautiful weather.

We were almost back to the car when it happened.

It was just terrible. "

Waggi Schneider still did a lot of sport

As a former athlete, Waggi Schneider was actually very healthy.

In 1952 he had reached the top list of the year in eleven different disciplines of athletics, and was even part of an Olympic selection.

When he was over 50, he still took off sports badges.

He remained loyal to the sport well into old age: in 2015 he broke a German record in the relay race among the over-80s.

He regularly met former athletics companions for mountain hikes.

“It's a terrible story,” says his son Rudi (54), who visits his father every day in the hospital.

"He has been doing very well in recent years." Only a few age-related complaints had bothered the father - such as a misdiagnosed Lyme disease or his artificial knee.

However, the hiking accident is not the only stroke of fate in Waggi Schneider's life.

In 1968 his first wife was brutally stabbed by a neighbor.

The attack was actually aimed at the then two-year-old son Rudi.

The motive: envy of Waggi's successful music career!

The mother faced the attacker and paid for it with her life.

"When you have to be on stage again and have to be funny, that's incredibly hard," said Waggi Schneider looking back in 2014 in an interview.

The group performed for the last time in October 1999

But show business does not let go of him: A short time after the drama, he appears again. And the regulars' table, on which the troops recite jokes in dialect, sell like hot cakes. With Waggi Schneider on bass, Hans Döring on accordion and Georg Niedermeier on guitar, the "3 funny Moosachers" have been celebrating success for decades. They are among the most successful artists in their genre. The only real Moosacher is Waggi Schneider, because Döring comes from the Schwanthalerhöhe and Niedermeier from Schwabing. The three friends become stars of folk music, some of them have over 250 performances a year. Big names like Karl Dall, Heino and Maria Hellwig share the stage with them. The musicians sell over five million records.Despite the success, the trio remains true to its roots and regularly plays in places like the "Alten Wirt" in Moosach. Schneider sees himself primarily as an entertainment musician.

In 1990 the Moosachers applied for the Grand Prix of Folk Music and landed in eleventh place in the German preliminary round with Engerl samma olle.

There will also be concerts in the coming years, the last in October 1999. When Döring died of a stroke in 2000, the jolly Moosachers' joint career was officially over.

In 2004 Georg Niedermeier also dies - Waggi Schneider is the last living member of the folk singer trio.

He remains loyal to the music, but in the following years he plays for himself and his family - at home in Gröbenzell in the Bruck district, where he now lives.

He particularly enjoys accompanying pieces from the radio spontaneously on the bass violin.

Not only songs by the funny Moosacher, but also everything else that he likes.

The big Achievements

The “3 funny Moosacher” celebrated their most famous hit in 1971 with Ja, mir san mitm Radl.

But also the Brotzeit-Polka (“Mach ma Brotzeit, Brotzeit is the most beautiful time”) and old people, don't look so stupid are still long-running favorites in beer tents and at carnival celebrations.

Hans “Hansi” Döring (1931-2000) and Georg “Schorschi” Niedermeier (1929-2004) founded the group in 1952 with Rudolf “Waggi” Schneider.

The first record came out in 1960, followed by more than 100 LPs and singles.

The group appears on television with the likes of Peter Alexander and Peter -Frankenfeld.

The Bavarians are even causing a stir internationally: They tour as far as the USA and Canada.

They stood together on stage for a total of 47 years.
