Hardly anyone would have expected it at the beginning of the season: the

Garching Atomics

will play in the

final for the Bavarian baseball championship

and thus also for a place

in the 2nd Bundesliga

! Opponents of the Atomics will be

the wolves from Lauf

, who won the Bayern League North

in the Atomics Ballpark

of Garching

on

October 16

.

In winter, the Atomics had to rearrange themselves: with the departure of head coach Bernhard Greska, as well as the departure of two important players (Korbinian Zacherl and Lennart Greska), the team faced a major upheaval, which made the dream of "playoffs" a long way off . Within the club, however, a golden hit was landed with the new coaching duo Dominik Wulff and Frieder Bruckmann. The coaching duo managed to shape the squad into a real team and to cause a surprise in the Bayernliga Süd.

Despite the pandemic-related requirements, which made baseball training extremely difficult at the beginning of the year until well into spring, the coaches and the team used every opportunity to prepare for the new season. In June, with a two-month delay, the season finally started and the Atomics got off to a furious start! With four wins from the first four games against Gauting and Freising, the Garching team ignited the turbo and set a first exclamation point in the direction of competition. It wasn't until the 3rd match day that the bandits from Groebenzell managed to snatch the first point away from the Garchingern with an 8: 7. On the following game day, the Grizzlies from Freising also managed to keep a point in Freising. Everything indicatedthat the competition was able to make up for the supposed training deficit and are now playing at eye level with the Atomics.

Garchinger Atomics: We also trained during the summer break

This is what it looked like in the last home games against Gauting before the summer break. In both games they went into their last round of strokes with a deficit, but turned the games with a lot of morale and what should distinguish the Atomics over the entire season: patience and concentration on the stroke. At the summer break, the Atomics were quite surprising, but quite clearly with eight wins from ten games, at the top of the table of the Bayernliga Süd. Nevertheless, the players and coaches did not allow themselves a long break. Now the fire was burning, the playoffs were no longer a pipe dream. That is why the team worked tirelessly on game situations and their technique even during the summer break. Because after the summer break there was a key duel:The Haar Disciples 3 expects the Atomics to be second in the table on the day of the home game in Haar. In the meantime, it had officially been communicated that the playoffs would not be a championship round this year, but only the season winners of the north and south seasons would play a single game for the Bavarian championship and thus for promotion to the 2nd baseball league.

So the entire focus was on defending the top of the table. With the momentum of the strong performance from the first half of the season, the Garchinger came to Haar and demonstrated their claim to the top of the table in an impressive way. The Atomics won the first game easily with 15: 4, the second game of the day they won after a strong fight between both teams with 19:16 in the extra inning. With a winning streak of five games it went to Groebenzell, where arithmetically the relay win on the penultimate game day should be made perfect with a win. In the meantime, however, the Atomics had to pay tribute to important regular players' injuries during the intense season. Four injured players forced the coaches to get creative,so as not to lose sight of the goal in the last few meters. Therefore, some players from the junior division were brought into the team from the squad of the second team of the Atomics in order to fill the gaps that had arisen.

One of these young players did it in an outstanding way: junior player Nicholas Dürer faced a Bayernliga pitcher for the first time and paved the way for victory against the Bandits with a home run that brought three points. Inspired by this performance, the Atomics won both games against the Bandits, expanded their winning streak to an impressive 7 games, and at the end of the day were able to celebrate the relay victory in the Bayernliga Süd. The last home game of the season against the Disciples from Haar no longer had any influence on the table, but despite the misery of injuries the Garching team wanted to be used to end the regular season successfully. This succeeded insofar as a conciliatory 1-1 was allowed to be noted in the table at the end of the game day.

16 games and 13 wins: Successful despite "Corona season"

The Atomics won the season with 13 wins from 16 games in the end very confidently, which is due to the consistently good performance both on the offensive (a total of 200 points were scored) and on the defensive (only 109 points were allowed). The pitchers were phenomenal and the team was able to show their best performance at the crucial moments of the season. Coach Dominik Wulff sums up the season as follows: “The coaching duo (Bruckmann and Wulff) are extremely satisfied with the performance of the entire team. Although Corona had made the preparations for the season difficult, the boys did not let themselves get down and made the best of it. That we are now leaders in the table and will play for the Bavarian championship and promotion to the second Bundesliga on October 16 here in Garching,as coaches, we have by no means counted on ourselves! We are all the happier with the result! "

The Board of Directors adds: “In 2021, the Garching Atomics presented themselves very well as a baseball club, despite pandemic-related restrictions.

Not only the excellent performance of the first men’s team, but the sporting achievements of all teams (men and youngsters) are the result of joint sporting and voluntary efforts.

The club looks forward to the year 2022 with confidence. “That is why all those interested and friends of baseball are cordially invited to support the Atomics in the ball park in their fight for the championship.

The game starts on Saturday, October 16, at 1 p.m.

Entry is free, and the grill is burning too!

There is free draft beer while supplies last!
