Gotha painting "Old Man" a Rembrandt?

According to experts, one of the paintings that returned to Gotha after the most spectacular GDR art theft could possibly be a real Rembrandt.

Analyzes during the restoration of the painting "Old Man" indicated this, according to the Friedenstein Castle Foundation on Thursday.

The Schloss Friedenstein Foundation currently assigns the painting to the workshop and thus to the environment of Rembrandt (1606-1669).

Gotha - In the catalog for the new exhibition of the five returnees' paintings, the question is raised as to whether the portrait, which has so far hardly been noticed by Rembrandt research, was not created by the Dutch master himself - or was created with his participation in the workshop.

This was indicated, among other things, by the high quality of the painting and the pentimenti (changes in the painting process), said foundation curator Timo Trümper.

There is also a largely identical version of the painting in Cambridge (USA), which was signed by Rembrandt and dated to 1632.

For a classification of the Gotha painting in the work of Rembrandt, however, future assessments by research would have to be awaited, it said.

These are to be taken at an international conference in the run-up to a Rembrandt show planned in Gotha in 2027, as the foundation explained.

"That was a quick and spontaneous action," said SKD General Director Marion Ackermann on Tuesday in Dresden at the presentation of the work.

They only found out about the sale shortly before the action scheduled in London.

Before the theft in 1979, the painting was first attributed to Rembrandt's student Ferdinand Bol and later to Rembrandt's partner Jan Lievens.

"However, based on the knowledge we now have, both artists can be excluded," said Trümper.

The five old masters stolen from Gotha during the art theft 42 years ago had been extensively restored and examined after their appearance.

They will be shown in the special exhibition "Back in Gotha - the lost masterpieces" from October 24th to August 22nd, 2022 in the Ducal Museum in Gotha.
