At least 46 people have been killed in a huge fire that gripped a building in Kaohsiung city in Yinchang province in southern Taiwan and hundreds of people have been injured to varying degrees, firefighters in the territory reported.

The fire broke out on the 13th floor of a building that combines apartments and offices around three o'clock at night, with most of the 13-story tower residents sleeping.

Taiwan's central news agency reported that the fire spread quickly and many of the building's residents realized too late that their apartment was on fire.

Municipal Fire Department spokesman Li Qing-siu said the number of victims may be higher as entire areas of the building are still blocked to firefighters and rescue forces.

377 firefighters and rescue workers participated in the evacuation of the building from its occupants and 139 firefighters and ambulances reached the nearby streets at the scene of the disaster.

The local news agency reported that some of the victims are disabled people who lived in the project for people with disabilities located in one of the building sites.

Police said they are checking the security cameras in the building in order to rule out the possibility of intentional arson of the fire.
