The Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk (MDR) and the Saxon police want to work together more closely in the future. The MDR and the Police University of Saxony signed a corresponding cooperation agreement on Thursday. The aim is to ensure that journalists and police officers develop more understanding for the work of the respective side and that media representatives are better protected during police operations - for example against attacks by demonstrators.

Leipzig - "A few years ago I could not have imagined that I would be worried about demonstrations," said MDR director Karola Wille.

In the meantime, however, there is partly open hatred and aggression against media representatives.

It is therefore important for the MDR to provide its employees with the best possible protection against attacks during demonstrations, for example.

Cooperation with the police should be a building block for this.

The cooperation should also be about the work and rights of the press.

Police officers should already learn in their training what freedom of broadcasting means, for example in the procurement of film material, said Wille.

"Conversely, it also means: If the police have to do their job, what does that mean for us?"

As part of the cooperation, there will be seminars both for trainees in the middle service of the police as well as for commissioner candidates and seasoned police officers, as Mirko Göhler, Vice-Rector of the University of the Saxon Police, explained.

Concrete formats would be worked out in the coming months.

Both sides emphasized that they are already in regular contact, but that the agreement should consolidate the cooperation.

"Of course there will continue to be critical reporting about the police," said Wille.

A 13-year-old was caught stealing several condoms in the Allgäu.

As the police announced on Wednesday, the employee of a supermarket in Füssen (Ostallgäu district) observed on Monday how the boy took a total of eight condoms out of a package and let them disappear in his pocket.

When he was about to leave the market, the clerk stopped him.

In recent years there have been repeated attacks on journalists during demonstrations, for example against the Corona measures.

A ZDF television team, for example, was attacked by strangers on May 1, 2020 in Berlin on the sidelines of a demo.

The work of the police in demonstrations has also recently been criticized.

In September, the German Association of Journalists (DJV) criticized the fact that the “We are all LinX” demonstration had violated media representatives by the police.
