Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a switch to national currency transactions between the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Sputnik quoted Putin as saying in a video interview: “Such unfavorable external conditions should further stimulate the strengthening of cooperation within the Union,” stressing “the importance of close interaction in order to transition to national currencies, reduce the use of the dollar and the euro in mutual transactions, organize import substitution and develop high-tech industries and the provision of necessary food for the people.”
Putin noted that “sanctions against the Eurasian Economic Union countries are used not only as an instrument of unfair competition but also as a means to undermine legitimate governments by creating social, economic and political problems or exacerbating existing problems.”
On the fifth of last April, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said that the countries of Asia and the Pacific showed great willingness to deal in local currencies, not dollars.
The Eurasian Economic Union, which began its work in 2015, was formed on the basis of a customs union and a unified economic space. This union includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and Kyrgyzstan, and since May 2018, Moldova has become an observer in the union.
