Authorities in Turkey have arrested eight people, including two suspected Iranian agents, on suspicion of trying to abduct a defecting Iranian soldier back to Iran, the official news agency Anadolu reported yesterday (Wednesday).
The eight were captured in the province of Iran, on the border with Iran, in a joint operation by the Turkish police and intelligence service on September 24.
A Turkish government official confirmed the arrests, but did not elaborate.
Anadolu reported that Iranian agents had been sent to Turkey with the aim of creating a "network" that would abduct and flee the soldier to Iran.
According to the report, the group offered money to the soldier's wife and threatened to harm her family members in Iran if she refused to help them abduct him.
One of the agents was caught trying to enter the soldier's house, whose identity is unknown.
The other six suspects are Turkish citizens.
In recent years, Iran has operated several times on Turkish soil, where opponents of the Iranian regime live.
Last year, Turkish authorities arrested 11 people on suspicion of helping Iranian agents smuggle regime dissidents back into Iran.
