The Kulturquartier Mecklenburg-Strelitz commemorates the copper engraver Ferdinand Ruscheweyh (1780-1846) with a special exhibition. This is to recognize the importance of the artist from Neustrelitz, who was one of the most famous graphic artists at the time, as the Kulturquartier announced on Thursday. From this Friday on, graphic works from a Berlin private collection will be shown, including Ruscheweyh's famous Faust cycle based on drawings by the painter Peter von Cornelius (1783-1867).
Neustrelitz - Ruscheweyh was especially in demand as a reproduction graphic artist, because he copied and distributed works of art, which many contemporaries valued, as a Kulturquartier spokeswoman explained.
After training in Berlin, the engraver worked primarily in Vienna, Rome and Düsseldorf before moving back to Neustrelitz in 1833.
Many great minds, such as Goethe and Schiller, valued his abilities.
Ruscheweyh's works can now be found in museums in Schwerin, San Francisco and Düsseldorf.
