A general renovation of the Bürgermeister-Prandl-Schule in Penzberg, including the demolition and construction of the school gymnasium, would cost around 47.8 million euros. The city of Penzberg would even get 60.7 million euros if the school center were partly rebuilt. This is the result of a feasibility study commissioned by the city.

Penzberg - Almost 700 primary and middle school students are taught in 31 classes at the Mayor Prandl School.

The beginnings of the school center on Südstrasse go back almost 70 years.

The primary school was built in 1955, the middle school in 1958 and the gymnasium in 1959.

In the following decades there were additions, additions and renovations, most recently in 2018 the replacement of windows and the ventilation system in the middle school area.

The school building is almost 70 years old in parts

Because the school center was getting on in years, the city of Penzberg commissioned a feasibility study in November 2020 to determine the scope of renovation of elementary and middle schools, gyms and the playground.

Peter-Andreas Müller from the "SMP" planning office in Planegg presented the result to the building committee on Tuesday evening.

You went from room to room with a checklist to determine the state of construction and the energetic situation, said Müller.

The state of construction corresponds to the age, according to his assessment.

This means that something urgently needs to be done when the primary school was built in 1955, according to the expert.

According to him, things are looking better at middle school.

However, he attested that both schools were in poor energy condition, with the exception of the areas that were recently renovated.

But first you have to take care of the old gyms, said Müller.

They would have damage to the building fabric and no thermal insulation.

Two variants: one very expensive, the other even more expensive

In order to remedy the deficiencies, Müller named two possible variants: one very expensive, the other even more expensive. For both variants, he assumed that the number of elementary school students would rise slightly over the next five years and that of middle school students would remain stable.

In the first variant, elementary and middle schools would be completely renovated, a new middle school would be built, and the gymnasiums would be demolished and rebuilt.

In order for the school to continue running, some of the children would have to move temporarily to a four-story wooden module building.

After planning and awarding the work, according to Müller, the demolition of the gyms and the construction of the wooden module building for the lessons could only begin in 2023.

The school complex could then be gradually refurbished by the end of 2025.

After that, the wooden module construction would be dismantled again.

Müller said the general renovation could be finished by 2026.

As a “rough cost estimate” for this variant, he cited 47.8 million euros, of which around 32 million went to the modernization.

In any case, gyms are to be demolished and rebuilt

In the second variant, according to the feasibility study, only part of the middle school would remain standing and renovated. The rest of the school complex would be torn down and rebuilt in the form of “three learning houses for modern forms of learning”: in wooden modular construction and with two floors that could be extended to three floors. The gyms would also be demolished and rebuilt in this variant. However, according to Müller, the whole thing will take five years longer in order to disrupt school operations as little as possible, i.e. until 2031. And it would be even more expensive. Roughly estimated it came to 60.7 million euros, of which 34.4 million for the new learning houses and 8.6 million for the new gym. Nevertheless, he recommended this variant to the city. The higher costs, explained Müller, would be offset by a significantly longer service life and lower maintenance costs.Likewise, according to him, an extension would be more possible. He also referred to the “measures for modern learning” in the learning houses. As an aside, Müller mentioned a third variant: a small renovation and a continuation in 15 years - just like in the past.

Mayor: Let the information sink in for now

"It is clear that we have to do something," said Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) in view of the old buildings.

“There are tables at school, and I still have chewing gum on them.” But first they'll let the information sink in and then think about how to proceed.

It is also a question of whether to start in 2023 or later, said Korpan.

Maria Probst (CSU) admitted that so much had to be done "was not clear to us".

Her parliamentary group colleague Ludwig Schmuck, on the other hand, stated with reference to the around 70 million euros for the new vocational school center in Weilheim that he was not surprised.

And he warned: "If we delay it, it won't get any cheaper."
