Former Minister Yaakov Edri will be able to return to serve as mayor of Or Akiva from November 7 under restrictive conditions, the Lod District Court ruled earlier this week, almost a year after being arrested on suspicion of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, money laundering, theft, sexual offenses and violence.

According to the suspicion, Edri "blatantly, systematically and persistently used his powers, his lofty and undisputed status in Or Akiva and his significant influence on municipal officials and the spatial committee," to advance the interests of businessmen, entrepreneurs and contractors, in exchange for bribes.

In addition, he sought compensation for the needy in the city, and in practice used them for his personal needs, and even used municipal employees for this.

The investigation ended more than three months ago, but the indictment has not yet been filed - although the prosecution presented the draft indictment to the court three days after the end of the investigation.

Edri's return to mayor under restrictive conditions was decided in a hearing held by Judge Ido Druian Gamliel, after the Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office for Taxation and Economics filed an appeal against the decision of the Magistrate's Court in Rishon Lezion last week to return Edri to office unconditionally.

In accordance with the restrictive conditions set by the court with the consent of the State Attorney's Office, Edri will not be able to deal with planning and construction issues;

He will not serve on city council and municipal corporations administrative committees;

And his deputy is to sign contracts and engage in engagements and commitments.

In addition, he will have no responsibility for personnel matters and he will not serve in any institution.

The investigation against Edri, which was conducted at the National Fraud Investigation Unit (JHA) at Blade 433, began in 2019, initially as an undercover investigation. , From the vast body of evidence they have gathered, emerges "a sophisticated mechanism of bribe payments to transfer cash to it, in addition to receiving bribes through purchase vouchers, given to it for years under the guise of donations to the needy."
