Around two years after the city railway went bankrupt, the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) has awarded the routes around Dresden to DB Regio.

A ten-year contract was signed on Thursday, announced the transport association in Dresden.

From December 12th, after winning the tender, DB Regio will now operate on the four routes in the diesel network:

Dresden / Kamenz - From Dresden to Kamenz and Königsbrück, through the Müglitz Valley from Heidenau to Altenberg and between Pirna and Sebnitz.

The VVO had advertised the local transport offer around Dresden after the city railroad surprisingly ceased operations in 2019 and filed for bankruptcy.

After an emergency award, the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn has so far operated in the local transport network for the VVO.

With the award, there is an innovation on the Dresden-Kamenz route: from mid-December, trains will run Monday to Friday between 4.30 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. and between 2.00 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. every 30 minutes instead of the hourly previous hour.

Due to the tight schedule, barrier-free platforms, connection to bus lines and hundreds of park-and-ride spaces, the route will reach S-Bahn standard and will be renamed to S-Bahn 8 with the timetable change from December 12th, it said.

The Lord Mayor of Kamenz, Roland Dantz, welcomed the project.

“The number of commuters to Kamenz has increased significantly in recent years, as many new jobs have been created.” There are already more than 600 commuters at the Kamenz train station.

That could be increased by the closer clocking.

For the operation of the local transport network, the railway wants to employ more than 100 employees and use around 20 vehicles from its own stock.
